The distance is a daunting 101km, and although there are no mountain passes, there are some significant climbs, like Maalgate on the R101, about 10km out from the start, and the long climb up out of Mossel Bay en route to the N2. At Aloe Ferox Guest Lodge, Dolly & Quartus Coetzee Arrival at AloeFerox in Albertiniaput on a very welcome spread of fresh fruits, sandwiches and drinks to welcome the handcyclists to Albertinia. Quartus had done a sterling job making some of the rooms accessible with ramps and promises that by next year he will have completed the rest of the ramps so we can bring more handcyclists!

Everyone was very quiet after their first long day on the road, more resting and sleeping than partying as everyone contemplated the route for the next day.
